'Turkish' meadow brown - Maniola telmessia

Family: Satyridae.

Flight Time: April-September.

Size: 40-50mm

Altitude: 0-1000m

It took a while to figure this one out. I have to admit at the time I though it was just a Gatekeeper (Pyronia spp.) or Meadow brown (Maniola jurtina) and it wasn't until I had a good look at the photo that I noticed it wasn't quite right.

The new edition of the Collins Field guide to European butterflies covers this species which is found on a few Greek islands as well as Turkey. It hasn't a common name, so perhaps Turkish meadow brown would suffice.
